Kelly Khumalo Under Fire for Homophobic Comments

Kelly Khumalo is proving that nobody likes a sore loser – especially a homophobic one – after taking to Twitter to speak her mind.

While many Mzansi musicians were living their best lives at the South African Music Awards (SAMAs) on Saturday, 18 November, Khumalo took to the social media platform to criticise the honourees.

The 39-year-old singer seemed to take particular exception to gospel singer, Ntokozo Mbambo, who claimed the Female Artist of The Year award that Khumalo herself had been in the running for.

“Nontokozo naye uyazi” [she knows] that numbers don’t lie. Asimesabi [we are not afraid of her] Fuseg Samas,” Khumalo tweeted in a now-deleted thread just after the award ceremony, sparking backlash from Mbambo’s fans who felt the comment was out of line.

At first, Khumalo stuck by her guns and doubled down on the tweeps who called her out. However, the light of the next day appeared to bring clarity and she finally apologised: “Ngonile with my homophobic remarks ngiyaxolisa that was uncalled for. [sic]”

Mbambo, to her credit, appeared to be too busy celebrating her award to engage in the Twitter shenanigans and seems to be happily ignoring the drama.
